Church of Panagia
The Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) on Folegandros is a significant and beautiful site on the island, is situated on a fabulous spot above Chora. Its elevated position offers an excellent view of the island and the Aegean Sea.
You can reach the church by taking a stone zigzag path that starts from Pounda Square in Chora. The walk to the church takes approximately 15 minutes and provides an opportunity to enjoy the scenic surroundings and panoramic views.
The Church of Panagia has historical significance and is believed to have been constructed on the ruins of an ancient temple. Some of the marble parts from the ancient temple were repurposed as building material for the construction of the church. Visitors can observe ancient inscriptions and the bases of statues within the church’s interior and courtyard.
This church not only holds religious importance but also serves as a cultural and historical landmark on Folegandros. Its location, perched above the town of Chora, offers a breathtaking vantage point to appreciate the island’s beauty , the surrounding seascape and a beautiful sunset.
